Project description
This project was for a start-up, premium bottled water company based in the west of Ireland.
They required a brand name and logo that represented the product, as well as a product label and mock-up of the label in use on a bottle.
STEP 1: The brand name and logo
As the company stressed that they wanted to position themselves in the higher-end segment of the bottled water market, they specifically wanted a traditional brand name and logo that represented the heritage of the product.
For this reason I based the shape of the logo on the silhouette of the low mountains the are found all along Ireland’s west coast.
The name of the brand, “Sliabh Mór” is the Irish for large mountain, and is the name of an actual mountain on Ireland’s Atlantic coast.
STEP 2: The product label
The product label has several layers.
Firstly I wanted to create a nuanced colour palette that featured shades of turqouise. For this, I created a mountain shape in Adobe Illustrator and then filled it with a gradient colour that ran from a sky blue to a pale green. I then played with the transparency of this shape, before overlapping it several times to produce the patterned effect that can be seen on the label.
After this, I added another subtle layer of embossed triskel shapes to represent the heritage of the product and to give it a more premium feel, before finally giving the label a textured paper finish.
The logo and border are in a dark blue colour which contrasts nicely with the turqouise shades of the label. This combination evokes images of stormy seas and dramatic coasts, which represent the freshness and natural origins of the product.
STEP 3: Product mock-up
I decided to showcase the product in a coastal west of Ireland scene to reflect its origins and to convey how fresh and natural this water is.
I wanted to display the product in the natural environment from which it is sourced to highlight that is far from any industry and thus that potential customers shoud view it as a purer and more natural choice than many of the competitors’ products.
